Florida State LeaderShape Institute
LeaderShape exists to inspire, develop, and support more
people committed to lead with integrity.
LeaderShape defines leadership:
Leadership involves living in a state of possibility, making
a commitment to a vision, developing relationships to move
the vision into action, and sustaining a high level of
integrity.
Effective leadership takes place in the context of a supportive
community and results in positive change.
Description:
The LeaderShape Institute is an interactive, energizing,
and unique experience that builds leadership skills no
other program can match. And since 1986, over 20,000 participants
from all over the world have graduated from our program.
It is six days of non-stop self-discovery and learning
from practical experiences that build your leadership concepts
and abilities.
Who:
Approximately 60 student participants, 2 student coordinators
and 6 faculty/staff from Florida State University attending
the week long Institute. Additionally, FSU will welcome
2 lead facilitators from the National LeaderShape, Inc.
who facilitate the curriculum for the week. All meals,
lodging, and materials are provided. Applications for the
annual LeaderShape will begin in early February.
How:
Florida State University is committed to assisting students
as they strive to achieve their highest leadership potential.
While LeaderShape is organized by the Center for Leadership
and Civic Education, the success of the program is due
in part to campus partners that have shown their support
through financial donations. These donations make it possible
for FSU students to attend at no cost. Sponsors for past
Institute sessions include: University Housing, WIMSE,
FSU’s Community of Communities, University Athletics,
Dean of Students, and the Oglesby Union.
When:
The LeaderShape Institute traditionally takes place the week
between the spring semester and the first summer session.
The 2008 Institute will be held April 28-May 3.
Outcomes:
The LeaderShape Institute is an intensive, energizing, six-day
educational experience designed to equip young adults to
become extraordinary leaders. Each session of The LeaderShape
Institute is comprised of approximately 60-70 students — ages
17-25 — from diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural
backgrounds. The Institute's curriculum is presented by
a group of facilitators who are all highly respected in
their own professions and serve as excellent role models
for the students.
Much of the week's work is done in small groups called "family
clusters," which create a safe, supportive learning
environment that allows participants to work together, form
close friendships, and benefit from new perspectives. Each
student in the cluster works to define his/her personal vision — an
extraordinary commitment to changing or contributing to the
world in a positive way.
Based on that vision, participants then develop a blueprint
for the action that they will undertake when they return
home — with the objective of effecting meaningful,
measurable change in their organization during the next 9-12
months. With the guidance of LeaderShape facilitators, participants
complete a blueprint that identifies the goals, relationships,
and action steps that are essential to the project’s
success.
Dynamic, challenging, and exciting, the week is intended
to produce a breakthrough in the leadership capacity of participants — benefiting
the students themselves, their respective organizations,
and the institutions that they will go on to lead and serve
in the future.
